The system was designed to meet the unique acoustic requirements of the venue, taking into account the auditorium’s age and the need for a system that could accommodate a wide range of performances, from classical music to rock concerts.
Designing the System
Challenges and Considerations
Designing a sound system for a historic venue like the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium presented several challenges. The auditorium’s original design and construction date back to 1932, and its acoustic characteristics have changed over time due to various renovations and modifications. The system needed to be designed to meet the unique acoustic requirements of the venue, taking into account the auditorium’s age and the need for a system that could accommodate a wide range of performances. The system had to be able to handle a wide range of frequencies, from low bass notes to high treble frequencies, without distorting or overpowering the sound. The system also needed to be able to provide clear and accurate sound reproduction, even in the presence of background noise or other acoustic distractions.
The upgrade was prompted by the venue’s increasing demand for live events and the need for improved sound quality. The upgrade was a collaborative effort between RMB Audio and Martin Audio’s US distributor, Atlas Sound.
The Upgrade Process
The upgrade process began with a thorough assessment of the auditorium’s acoustics. A team of experts from Martin Audio and Atlas Sound conducted a site visit to evaluate the space’s sound quality and identify areas for improvement. They used specialized equipment to measure the auditorium’s frequency response, reverberation time, and other acoustic parameters. The team also conducted a series of listening tests to determine the optimal sound system configuration and settings for the venue. The assessment revealed that the auditorium’s existing sound system was struggling to produce clear and balanced sound, particularly in the low-frequency range. The team identified several key areas where the sound system could be improved, including the use of more efficient speakers and a more effective sound reinforcement system.
The New System
The new system is based on Martin Audio’s Wavefront Precision technology, which is designed to provide accurate and consistent sound reproduction across a wide range of frequencies. The system consists of a combination of Martin Audio’s CDD and CDA series speakers, which are designed to provide clear and balanced sound in a variety of applications.
A custom-built, 12-foot long, 4-foot wide, and 2-foot deep enclosure was constructed to house the 12 subs. The enclosure was designed to be modular, allowing for easy access and maintenance.
The Sound of a Thousand Subwoofers
The small-format WPC line array, powered by 11 Martin Audio iK42 amplifiers, is a marvel of modern audio engineering.
“We were able to get everything up and running quickly, thanks to the clear instructions and the quality of the RMB Audio equipment.”
A Seamless Installation Experience
The integration team at RMB Audio worked closely with the client to ensure a smooth installation process. They were able to put the amp rack together on site, which was a significant challenge due to the complexity of the system. The team was able to complete the installation in just two days, despite the initial two-week timeline. The client was impressed with the speed and efficiency of the installation process. The clear instructions provided by RMB Audio made it easier for the team to assemble the equipment.
Challenges and Solutions
The installation process was not without its challenges. The team encountered several issues, including:
The production is a beloved holiday tradition for many in the North Carolina State University community. The show is a classic tale of redemption, featuring Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who is visited by three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The production is a staple of the university’s theater program, and it’s a great way for students to get involved in the holiday season.
